1 Now Sarai, Abram’s wife, had borne him no children. But she had an Egyptian slave named Hagar; 2 so she said to Abram, “The LORD has kept me from having children. Go, sleep with my slave; perhaps I can build a family through her.”
Abram agreed to what Sarai said. 3 So after Abram had been living in Canaan ten years, Sarai his wife took her Egyptian slave Hagar and gave her to her husband to be his wife. 4 He slept with Hagar, and she conceived.
Looking throughout the story here of Abram you will see God's continued covenant of offspring. Abram and Sarai apparently didn't like God's time schedule and decided to hurry things up a bit. That sense of doubt entered thier minds much like Eve at the Garden of Eden. Satan exclaimed "Did God really say????" to Even and she entertained handling things her own way. Abram and Sarai probably had that same idea. God told us this but maybe He meant to handle it this way. We will just help him a long a little bit. That idea lead to anger and jealously and eventually Hagar being sent out.
Before you get to judgemental of Abram and Sarai you might check yourself a bit. Have you ever tried to hurry God along? Have you ever placed matters in your own hands? I have and man it can lead to a mess.
