"Study this Book of Instruction continually. Meditate on it day and night so you will be sure to obey everything written in it. Only then will you prosper and succeed in all you do." (Joshua 1:8)
Tonight in our bible study we discussed the Christian discipline of Meditation. Let me get this picture out of the way.

This is not the meditation that God intends for us to use. The meditation God set out as a discipline is focused on his word and the Lord. Our pastor brought up a great point tonight. Before the fall of man God walked as a physical presence with him. This type of relationship must have been amazing. Now after the fall things changed and God sent us numerous ways to focus and communicate with him. One of those ways is meditation.
Think of it like this:
John Doe at work makes a rude comment to you. You don't really think much about it at first. As the day wears on you think more and more about it. What did John mean by that? I should have said blank to him. He better watch it because next time! All day you stew over it and it just makes you madder and madder. Don't you hate that feeling.
Now reverse it and put a positive twist on it:
Jane Doe reads a verse "Then Jesus Wept" (John 11:35). At first glance she takes it at face value. Then all day long Jane thinks more about it. Why did Jesus weep? Was it because his friends left him? Was it because he knew the pain he would feel? Was it because he would miss walking with his disciples? Did this show his human side? And this list of questions could go on and on. All day you truly think about or meditate on that scripture. That very moment you should realize you are walking with God.
Sweet huh? He sure is!
