I was talking with my brother today about what I have labeled Chicken Thursday. Every Thursday MCU cafeteria has fried and baked chicken. Many people that don't eat in the cafeteria during the week show up. I really don't think the chicken is that great but for $1.50 it is terrific. So of my co-workers pick up two plates. One plate is made for just chicken bones.
John mentioned casual Friday on the way back from the cafeteria. This got me to thinking about how we label days of the week. This gives us some sort of mental calendar that we can look forward to.
Monday - Work/School
Tuesday - Possible Travel/Home
Wednesday - Church
Thursday - Chicken Thursday/Home/Possible Travel
Friday - Casual Friday/Home/Family Movie Night
Then there is the weekend. Next is our weekly and monthly calendar. Those are riddled with soccer games, play practices, church events, family events and vacations, anniversaries and birthdays. All of these are place as things to look forward to. This is a cooping mechanism for some to help them through daily life. The problem is that all this looking forward blinds us from what is happening now.
Before we know it we are looking backward. We think:
Remember when Micah...
Remember when Abbi...
Remember when Hannah...
Remember when Chloe...
Remember when we...
Remember how Mom/Dad use to...
The list can go on and on. What I have noticed is if I spend each day looking forward to the next day then I miss out on what is happening no. Maybe it is time to slow down and enjoy.
