Today I had a very humbling call from a student in which I advise. His name is Blake and he has Cerebral palsy. Blake is in our Christian Ministry program and is doing well. Every Tuesday Blake drives to campus and attends class. All the while with a smile on his face and adding insight to the scriptures I am certain. He called me today to explain that he was afraid that he was going to have to drop an online class. His medicines were not working as well as they needed to and it took him 10 minutes just to type two sentences. Afterward his hands hurt from having to stretch them around the keyboard. After talking we worked out a plan to keep him on track. I must also add we have a wonderful professor (Dr James Cecil) that allowed Blake the opportunity to recited his work to him rather than typing. Blake is so appreciative and was positive about the whole situation. He explained to me that he was going to physical therapy and he would be able to take an online class then.
We as students many times make excuses for not hitting deadlines or missing classes. Most of the time it is simply out of pure laziness. Blake on the other hand doesn't allow his condition to be an excuse for laziness. We have so much to learn in life and it takes people like Blake to teach us.
