The first part we see the Psalmist explaining that he knows surely that God is with his people BUT that he did envy the worldly people. It fits well with us today because like many I wonder why the ungodly flourish and the godly often struggle. The psalmist wonders the same thing. “They don’t have troubles like other people; they’re not plagued with problems like everyone else.” At one point the Psalmist says “I get nothing but trouble all day long; every morning brings me pain.”
There comes a time of evaluation: “So I tried to understand why the wicked prosper. But what a difficult task it is!” Then in one verse the tides switch “Then I went into your sanctuary, O God, and I finally understood the destiny of the wicked.” When the Psalmist enters the sanctuary he gets the understanding. This is not just of why they flourish but he must evaluate himself. He says “Then I realized that my heart was bitter”. Then realization that his worship was hindered because of envy and arrogance occurs.
Finally the first verse I mentioned makes sense. Even though we have those times God never lets go of his people. We may not flourish on this temporal earth but we will in eternity. That is something the world can’t say.
