The flaming pan of death.

The other night I was preparing dinner. I was gonna make chicken fajitas so I needed to heat up some grease in a pan. I had stepped away to check a football score when I hear Micah yell "FIRE!!!". I look over to the stove and notice the pan engulfed in flames. I didn't really know what to do so I ran over and grabbed the flaming pan and headed toward the front door. I opened the door with one hand and flung the pan outside into the yard. All you could see in the dark was a sizzling ball of fire hit the grass and then go out. After that I had to open windows and doors to let the smoke out.

Note to self : Don't be an idiot and leave hot grease in a pan on high. It seems to catch fire!

I do believe I have been on a stupid streak here lately. There may be a weekly blog entry titled Jamie's stupidity coming soon if this keeps up. I will post some more tomorrow about the kids singing at church Sunday night. Until then...only you can prevent grease fires kids.

A brief week summary...

I really didn't know how to title this post. As a blogger there are times where I don't really think it is worth typing about a certain day. Over the last few days I do believe I have something to post. So this is kind of a summary.

First I would like to tell you about my run in with the law. Thursday night I was headed home from our youth night and was driving through town. I had cut through some streets to scare my niece Shania. After a brief detour we headed back home. I noticed a police man began following me very close. I minded my stops and speed to keep from getting a ticket. At one time I thought he was gone but before you knew it he was behind me again. All of a sudden the lights are on. I pull over and the officer does the famous "how are you doing tonight??". He then informs me that I have a light out over my license plate. I wanted to say...shouldn't you be a Wal-mart catching shop lifters? Instead I just told him I didn't know that it was out (Nor did I care...lol). While this is happening Jordyn is snapping pictures of our bust. Anyway he runs my license and sends me on my way. I guess he realized I wasn't a crack dealer.

Second on a better note out children were in a Christmas play Wednesday night. Micah was a wise man (gets that from his father) and the girls were angels (Also gets that from their father). It was great to see the different personality types. Micah ate up the stage and was the only one bowing at the end. Abbi looked terrified at first but did fine. Hannah just went up there no problem. Meanwhile Chloe is yelling "Abbi!!! Abbi!!!" the whole time. So although Chloe was not seen in the play she was definitely heard.

Finally tonight we had the Hughes Family Cookie night. We all got together and cut out cookies, baked and decorated. Everyone took part in this. Buffy got best of show with her evil Christmas bear. Below you will see the little Christmas devil. Buffy told the kids that she would leave that one for Santa. If that cookie was left for Santa I know one thing. He would not return and that cookie would haunt his dreams. Luckily the kids had the opportunity to choose a cookie to eat. Micah picked the bear which was a dumb and smart move. Smart that Santa will not have to be terrified but dumb because the demon now rests in Micah's stomach.

Stop and smell the roses....wait no that is a rose.

This weekend I was in a wedding in TN. I was asked to be in a wedding for a couple I worked with on the Arizona Missions. During the rehearsal Friday night I noticed 4 huge pillars standing behind all the decor with nothing on them. I made the statement to Buffy about them being nice but they needed something on them. Nothing else was thought of about that for the rest of the evening.

Saturday during the wedding picture I looked back at the pillars to notice 4 nice rose arrangements on each one. Buffy had brought it to my attention and I exclaimed "I see them and I can also smell them from here." Buffy was so nice to remind me in a totally nice and non-sarcastic way "That is because you have a rose on your tux...weirdo."

That is right you all I do occasionally have brain farts just like all of everyone. This was an expulsion of gas so large that my brain actually disappeared.

Another busy Thursday

Most every Thursday I spend almost 14 hours at church. I come in for my regular office hours and then we have our youth Open Gym Night. We have a lot of things for the youth to do. We have indoor badminton, basketball, volleyball, ladder ball, ping pong, board games and the new addition PS3. What is great about the PS3 is that we hook it up to the projector and blast it on the wall. Anyway ...back to it being busy on Thursdays. The day is probably one of the most draining of the week.

Right now I seem to have about 10 things going at once. I am cleaning out a room for tonights PS3 games, preparing a slide show for out Uganda Church presentation, putting together the new indoor badminton net (pretty sweet) and charging PS3 remotes. It took me almost 30mins to figure out how to turn them off. The wonders of Google.

Well I hope you all have a great evening! Cya on the flip side (don't know why I typed that...but too late it stays).

A Sport?

Last night I witnessed a Calloway County High School game. I actually went to see my niece Jordyn cheer. Unfortunately I wouldn't hear are word from the cheerleaders. Behind us were parents from the opposing team. The team will remain nameless...cough.. cough.. Marshal ..cough ..County (ooops). Anyway the whole entire game they screamed at the referees or their own players. I heard such childish comments like "Why is everyone so quiet while Calloway shoots...they probably put it in the paper". I was like you have to be kidding me. Grow up!
I will admit the referees were less than desirable but they were doing their best. They were not calling fouls well on either side. Calloway got away with a bunch and so did Marshall. Of course the parents behind me probably believed they were hired communist thugs sent to destroy their girls team.

At then end of the games we prepared to leave. I then was graced with the chance to see a typical psycho cheerleader mother. She blew her top because the girls were going to wear a certain suit for the next game. After my nieces comment (Denisha) "I doesn't matter" she turned red and left.

So I left the game with a puzzled look on my face. People if our lives revolve around sports and cheer leading we are crazy. Also if we don't allow our kids to just get out there and have fun we are failing them. They will either quit or go on to become a person obsessed with sports in an unhealthy way. Wake up and realize it is a SPORT not a lifestyle.

The hustle of it all.

Over the last few weeks I have been so busy that even blogging is not an option. With church activities, Dr's visits, Mission Trip work and family things have been moving fast. I would like to thank my parents AGAIN for taking care of my children here lately.

Dad and Mom you have been a lifesaver and we really appreciate and love you. You have spent a lot of time babysitting our kids and we know you must be drained. Thanks so much.

Christmas is getting closer and closer and things seem to actually be slowing down a bit. That is a good thing so we can focus on the holiday. You know over the last few days I have realized something.

Christmas is not about presents.
It is not about parties.
It is not about holiday music.
It is not about Church presentations.
It is not even about family.

It is about the savior stepping out of heaven and into the world. He came to reconnect us with God in a wonderful relationship. We go back to the time when God walked with Adam in the garden. Now God through the holy spirit walks again with us. That personal relationship has been re-established.

Once we focus on that the list above falls into place and becomes more special. With Christ as the center

The party is about a savior.
The holiday music becomes worship.
Church presentations become spiritual reminders.
Families can gather to learn about the Savior's gift.

If you are reading this remember to keep Christ first.

Christmas like a child

Friday night we took a group of youth to the Third Day - Jars of Clay Christmas Offerings Tour. I must say it was an awesome concert and one everyone should have gone to. There was a couple of songs that brought tears to my eyes but this one really hit home for some reason. The name of the song was "Christmas like a Child". As you listen to the song it helps to to remember the awe we once had as children for Christmas. It wasn't just about Santa Claus or presents there was much more. It seemed to have a magic glow to the whole season to which only children could only fully appreciate. Take your self back when you were a kid... The sounds of Christmas music, church plays, family dinners and gatherings, hopes and wishes of gifts, TV Christmas Specials, Sunday School lessons about Jesus' birth, decorated houses, trees light up and much more. Everything seemed to breathe Christmas and people acted happier. Something got lost along the way as we became adults. Reality started to kick in and our appreciation for the day faded. Look at the song lyrics:

I want to feel Christmas, how it used to be
With all of its wonder falling on me
This season has felt so empty, oh for quite a while
I want to feel Christmas like a child

I want to see snowflakes fall to the ground
My brothers and sisters all gathered around
Singing "Away In A Manager" as we sit by the fire
I want to feel Christmas like a child

It's been so long now, I can't say
Just when I lost my way
But I'm going back to how it was
When this day meant everything
And we spent our time remembering
The baby Child born for us

It's all about Jesus, asleep in the straw
This infant, this King, this Savior for all

So I don't need bells to be ringing
'Cause I'll join with angels singing ..Gloria
And I can feel Christmas like a child
I want to feel Christmas like a child...

That glow we lost is Jesus. We got caught up in the expenses, gifts and travel plans that we forgot Jesus. When we really ...I mean really .....focus our sights on Jesus and why we celebrate that spirit of Christmas returns full force. But Jesus said, “Let the children come to me. Don’t stop them! For the Kingdom of Heaven belongs to those who are like these children.” (Matt 19:14)

Thank you Micah, Abbi, Hannah and Chloe for showing me that glow. Lets go to Jesus.
